About this Cocktail

Designed this cocktail for an art salon. Named after Captain Sigsbee (later Admiral Sigsbee) who was an oceanographer and later in the American Navy. The deepest part of the Gulf of Mexico is named the Sigsbee deep. As a Captain he is most famous for when the ship under his command, the USS Maine exploded in a freak accident in Havana Cuba which helped trigger the Spanish-American War — hence the smokiness and Cuban tobacco bitters.

  • 2 oz rye whiskey
  • 1/2 oz Cocchi Americano
  • 1/2 smokey tea syrup*
  • Couple of dashes of Cuban Tobacco bitter

Place all in a shaker with ice, shake, strain and pour into a cocktail glass.

Alternate Sigsbee Sour version: replace the Cocchi with fresh lemon juice

* Smoked Tea Syrup: bring 2 cups of water to a slow simmer, add 15 or so pink peppercorns and 5 bags of Russian Twilight (or other smoked black tea). Simmer for 5 minutes and remove teabags. Add 5 bags of Gunpowder Green tea and simmer for 3 minutes before removing tea bags. Strain out peppercorns. Add water to get back to exactly 2 cups. Then add 2 cups of sugar.
