About this Cocktail

It's about time to break out some patriotic cocktails - this one is essentially an old fashioned with an emphasis on the old. I used some brandy from Laird's, America's first commercial distillery founded in 1780, and some Old Overholt rye, founded in 1810. Angostura is kind of un-american, so I went with Boker's... which at least owes its recipe to the US of A. Oh well, the Star Spangled Banner was written to the tune of a british song anyway.

  • 1.5 oz Laird's apple bonded brandy
  • 0.5 oz Old Overholt Rye
  • 2 blackberries
  • 2 dashes Boker's Bitters

Muddle blackberries in a mixing glass and then add bitters. I prefer chilling my old fashioneds beforehand, so go ahead and add the rye, brandy and some ice as well. Give it a quick stir and strain into a glass with a large block of ice. Garnish with a blackberry.
