Broken A.C. and a hungover coworker getting off her day bar shift. Damn it was hot in there. And this girl was hurting. I had to act fast, something julepy came to mind. Based off a fuzzy recollection of a similar drink I encountered online but had never made before. Gotta say, this turned out delicious. Very nice balance between smoke, sweet fruit notes, and acid. The smokey flavor and crushed ice make an interesting contrast.

Ingredients:
  • 2 oz Mezcal
  • 1 oz house made raspberry syrup
  • .75 oz fresh lime
  • .25 oz agave nectar
  • 8 basil leaves
Preparation:

In mixing glass, lightly muddle basil, .75 oz raspberry syrup, .25 oz. agave nectar. Add lime juice and mezcal. Set aside for a second...

Crush a bunch of ice and fill julep cup (or mule mug).

Cap mixing glass with tin and shake that thing like a bad habit. Double strain into julep cup. Add more crushed ice until snow cone effect is achieved. Drizzle remaining .25 oz raspberry syrup over fresh crushed ice. Garnish with expressed basil sprig, lime wheel.
