Like many people in our mixology community, I have been influenced more than any other way or medium via the videos of Liandro di Monrovia & Steve the Bartender. Some months back, I installed Steve’s app Shake & Strain onto my cell phone. Having only glanced at it once, my thoughts to using it after the fourth time my wife asked, “can’t you just make me something with Cranberry Juice?”. Presto! The app gave me a bunch of alternatives - and here is the Saigon Cooler! Steve’s comments mentioned a gin strong enough to stand up to the sweetness coming from the berry notes, so I went full on Navy Strength Gin from Durham Distillery, their Conniption. For the feint of heart, back it off, if you prefer something less boozy.
2 oz Durham Distillery Conniption Gin
1/2 oz Chambord Liqueur
3 1/2 oz Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice
3/4 oz Freshly Squeezed Lime Juice
6 Raspberries (1/2 muddle/ 1/2 Garnish)
Muddle (lightly) 3 raspberries in a cocktail shaker.
Combine all ingredients into the cocktail shaker & add ice.
Shake thoroughly until well chilled and double strain into a chilled high ball glass over fresh ice.
