About this Cocktail

Why is there always some form of contestation regarding The Who, When & Where of cocktail invention? At the very least there’s a healthy dose of ambiguity or skepticism. In this case, it’s generally accepted the Raffles Hotel in Singapore is the birthplace, but it’s the recipe which draws question. Yeah, the cocktail was born in 1915 (or was it in the 20’s?) and clearly includes gin & lime juice — ahh, but what else? Pineapple juice — sure...Cointreau, ok...cherry brandy - fine, Bénédictine, of course...Grenadine and Bitters — have we left anything out? The proverbial kitchen sink. Here’s the rub, my recipe below represent one of many with varying ratios, but not so the ingredients.

As a side note, just about every other Caribbean, Southern Florida and Western European Bar boasts how Ernest Hemingway drank there; the Singapore Sling and the Long Bar in the Raffles hosted Rudyard Kipling, W. Somerset Maugham, Joseph Conrad, Queen Elizabeth II, Noel Coward & Charlie Chaplain. So take that Ernie.

One more thing: Ok maybe two — if you want top your Sling off with a bit of club soda ...and if you’re in Singapore and make a stop at the Long Bar, expect to pay no less than $25 USD. (Conversely stop at my house, I won’t add club soda and I won’t charge you anything!)

  • 1 1/2 oz Tanquerey 10 Gin
  • 1/2 oz Cherry Heering
  • 1/2 oz Freshly Squeezed Lime Juice
  • 1 1/2 oz Pineapple Juice (2 oz option)
  • 1/4 oz Bénédictine
  • 1/4 oz Cointreau
  • Bar Spoon of Grenadine (2 bps option)
  • 2 Dashes Angostura Bitters
  • SurfSideSips glass bamboo straw
  • CocktailGarnishCo Dehydrated Lime Slice Garnish
  • Coco & Company Palm Tree or Sunglasses cocktail pick

Combine all ingredients into a cocktail shaker and fill with ice. Shake vigorously until well chilled.

Double strain into a chilled hurricane or tiki glass over a moderate amount of fresh ice. Note: my pictured Tiki glasses are doubled recipes - more booze, less ice!

Include a CocktailGarnishCo Dehydrated Lime Slice (optionally include a Maraschino Cherry as well) on a novelty cocktail pick (sunglasses or a palm🌴 will do fine. And finally, include a SurfSideSips eco-friendly straw.
