This Manhattan variation calls for white, or unaged, whiskey (also known as "white dog"), of which there are more and more brands on the market. Be sure to use bianco or blanc vermouth, such as Dolin Blanc; its aromatics and flavor are very different from those of dry vermouth.

Fill a mixing glass with ice. Add the whiskey, Benedictine, bianco or blanc vermouth and the bitters. Stir vigorously, then strain into a chilled cocktail (martini) glass.
