About this Cocktail

A classic from the “Father of American Mixology”, Jerrry Thomas (at least as far as David Wondrich is concerned), but not his original recipe from 1862 or 1929 Bon Vivants Guide. By all means google it and you’ll find it on its actual pages in his book which then cos $2.50! (USD). Jerry used vanilla extract and sugar in his recipe, but this switched up somewhat. Researching this cocktail reminds me that while there are wonderful books from current day, paying homage to the greats and checking out their books in
total should not be overlooked.

  • 1.5 oz Cognac
  • 3/4 oz Licor 43
  • 3/4 oz Freshly Squeezed Lemon Juice
  • Garnish: Luxardo Maraschino Cherry and/or Orange Slice
  • Optional for a slightly sweeter version: 1/2 oz Simple Syrup or Vanilla Syrup

Combine all ingredients into into a cocktail shaker and add a meager bit of pebble ice just enough to start the dilution.

Whip shake the cocktail shaker until all or most of the ice is gone.

Double strain over fresh pebble ice into a medium to large chilled cocktail glass.

Per Jerry’s instructions use a straw — I used the incredible Skeleton Head SurfSideSips straw;garnish with a Luxardo Maraschino Cherry and a Cocktail Garnish Co Dehydrated Orange Slice.
